The idea of forming
a Rotary Club of Belur was first born in the year 1965 in
the mind of Rtn. Mihir Roy who had attended a social fellowship
held at Belur, hosted by Rotary Club of Howrah. The then DG
Rtn. C.R.Bose assigned Rtn. Mihir to conduct the survey of
the locality, which however could not be completed during
the tenure of Rtn. C.R.Bose.
In the later part
of the year 1965, the then DG Rtn. RN. Mukherjee appointed
Rtn. A.K. Sett of R.C. of Howrah as his special Representative
for Extension assigning his to explore the possibility of
forming a Rotary Club of Belur, Unfortunately, the Club could
not be organised, as the question of relinquishing the territory
was not finalised by R.C. of Howrah due to change in the bourndary
Bally Municipality. But in the latter held of year 1965, Rtn.
Sell succeeded after having several meetings with the respectable
and prominent residents of the locality. The 1st formal meeting
was held on 1st December, 1966 at Jindal Mansions which was
attended by many distinguished persons including Rotarians
from Rotary club of Howrah and discussed about the infrastructures
for forming and functioning of the Club viz. Admission Fee,
Annual membership Fee, venue, time and day of the meetings
of the club to be held.lt was decided to hold the meetings
on Thursday at 6 p.m. at Rly. Officer’s Club Howrah.
